Faya Tess, born Thérèse Kishila Ngoyi on October 8, 1966, in Kinshasa, DR Congo, is a celebrated Congolese singer and songwriter. She started her career in 1986 with the renowned Afrisa International Band, led by Tabu Ley Rochereau, quickly rising to prominence due to her powerful vocals and engaging performances. Tess spent a decade with Afrisa, contributing to many albums before branching out into her solo career. In 2000, she released her debut solo album Keba, which won her the Best Singer in Central Africa award. Known for her distinctive voice and passionate songs, she touches on themes of love, human rights, and social justice. Her music blends Congolese rumba with contemporary styles, making her one of the prominent figures in modern Congolese music. Faya Tess is also recognized for reworking classic Congolese songs, honoring the legacies of artists like Tabu Ley and Franco. Her influence extends beyond Africa, with her music reaching international audiences.
